PROYECTO GAIA TIERRAS VIVAS

Tayrona, Sierra Nevada

It is located in the north of Colombia on the Caribbean Coast, just 42 km from the beaches of Santa Marta, where tourists lull themselves to sleep with the sound of the waves. Thanks to the presence of the snow-capped peaks Colón and Bolívar (5,775 and 5,560 meters above sea level, respectively), the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is the highest coastal mountain in the world. There hides the Ciudad Perdida archaeological park, known as Teyuna, the heart of the Tayrona civilization.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a magical tourist destination in Colombia where the wisdom of nature and indigenous wisdom come together. By entering the Sierra Nevada you will have the opportunity to encounter the beauty and exuberance of a variety of ecosystems and nature, all in one place.

The Sierra is part of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Natural Park and the Tayrona National Natural Park. It has all the thermal levels, from the warm dry to the perpetual snow from whose thaw lagoons and rivers are born, at 3,000 meters above sea level. Around the 29 main rivers live countless birds and howler monkeys that sing the soundtrack of the Sierra.

Below 2800 meters, the soil is more fertile, so there are tropical forests depending on the thermal floor. Between 2800 and 4000 meters, the soil allows the growth of plants such as frailejones and pajonales. In the mountain paramo, the northernmost enclave of paramos in South America, above 4500-5000 meters there is a permanent snow cover.
